On March 24, 2023, Aaron Orozco, a 38-year-old Uber driver and Marine Corps veteran from Lynwood, California, was fatally shot while working. Orozco, who had been driving for Uber for several years, picked up two male passengers during his shift. The ride led them to a 7-Eleven parking lot on the 2800 block of Imperial Highway in Lynwood, where a physical altercation ensued between Orozco and the passengers.
During the confrontation, one of the suspects produced a firearm and shot Orozco in the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene by responding Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies.
Following the shooting, the suspects fled the scene in Orozco's vehicle, a black Honda Accord, which was later found abandoned approximately five miles away. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation, reviewing security footage from the store and gathering information from Uber to identify the perpetrators. In June 2023, authorities announced the arrest of one suspect involved in the shooting; however, his identity was not immediately disclosed. The second suspect remained at large, with law enforcement continuing efforts to locate and apprehend him.
Aaron Orozco's death left a profound impact on his family and community. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Medina, and their two young children, aged 3 and 9. Orozco had served in the United States Marine Corps, completing three tours in Iraq between 2001 and 2005. His wife described him as a dedicated father and a positive individual who brought joy to those around him. In response to the tragedy, Uber expressed condolences to the family, banned the rider's account, and cooperated with the police investigation. A GoFundMe campaign was established to support Orozco's family during this difficult time.
