On February 18, 2023, Auxiliary Bishop David O'Connell, aged 69, was found dead in his Hacienda Heights, California, home. A deacon discovered his body after O'Connell failed to attend a scheduled meeting. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reported that O'Connell had suffered multiple gunshot wounds, leading to an immediate homicide investigation.
