On August 16, 2024, at approximately 3 a.m., the Lockhart Police Department responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire near Rosewood and Trinity Streets in Lockhart, Texas. Upon arrival at a secondary location near South Colorado and Prairie Lea Streets, officers discovered 20-year-old Carlos Sanchez Jr. suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to a hospital in Kyle, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was connected to a disturbance that had occurred earlier on the evening of August 15. Authorities identified a juvenile as a person of interest in the case. On August 21, around 9:30 a.m., the juvenile suspect was located at a residence on East Market and Carver Streets. Although the suspect attempted to flee, they were apprehended without incident and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Sanchez's death. Additionally, four adults were arrested for harboring a fugitive.
The Lockhart Police Department continued its investigation, and on August 30, executed search warrants at three residences on the east side of the city. This operation led to the arrest of a second individual, who was charged with a Class A misdemeanor related to the case. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains active and that further arrests are possible.
Police Chief Gary Williamson emphasized that the incident was targeted and not random, aiming to reassure the community while the investigation proceeds. The tragic death of Carlos Sanchez Jr. marked Lockhart's first homicide of 2024, prompting a thorough and ongoing investigation by local law enforcement agencies.
