Fabian Hernandez, a 35-year-old Hispanic man from Hondo, Texas, was killed in a shooting in his hometown in the fall of 2023.
On the evening of October 11, 2023, at approximately 8:20 p.m., police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Avenue D after receiving a 911 hang-up call. When officers arrived, they found Fabian Hernandez in the roadway suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders transported him to University Hospital in San Antonio, where he was pronounced dead.
The Hondo Police Department immediately began a homicide investigation. The department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit were joined at the scene by a Texas Ranger and personnel from the Medina County District Attorney's Office.
During their investigation, detectives recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
Early in the investigation, authorities identified a juvenile as a person of interest and took the individual into custody on an unrelated charge. The investigation progressed, and authorities later arrested Christian James Hernandez, a 17-year-old resident of Hondo. He was charged in connection with Fabian Hernandez's death.
A murder trial for Christian James Hernandez was scheduled to begin with a jury on May 5, 2024. As of that month, the case was proceeding through the court system.
