On September 4, 2023, 12-year-old Frederick "Fred" Johnson Jr. was fatally shot in Houston's Sunnyside neighborhood. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. in the 4100 block of Barberry Drive near Scott Street. Fred was walking home with friends when they encountered 18-year-old Kahlis Willis. An argument ensued, escalating rapidly, and Willis allegedly drew a firearm, shooting Fred multiple times before fleeing the scene. Fred was pronounced dead at the location.
