On February 4, 2023, an off-campus house party near Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, turned tragic when gunfire erupted shortly after midnight. Among the victims was 18-year-old Cruz Garcia from Livingston, Texas, who sustained critical injuries and was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Despite medical efforts, Garcia succumbed to his injuries early on February 5, marking a devastating loss for his family and community.
The incident also claimed the life of 18-year-old James Jones from Huntsville, who died shortly after the shooting. Two other individuals were injured and hospitalized in serious condition. The shooting occurred at a large gathering near the intersection of 19th Street and Avenue O, an area close to the university campus. First responders, including officers from the Huntsville Police Department, Walker County EMS, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers, Sam Houston State University police, and Walker County Sheriff's deputies, arrived promptly to administer lifesaving measures and secure the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement swiftly identified and apprehended two suspects. On the afternoon of February 4, 22-year-old Joe Allen Lewis and 19-year-old Lynn Johnson, both from Livingston, Texas, were taken into custody. Lewis was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, and held on a $250,000 bond. Johnson faced charges of assault causing bodily injury, a Class A misdemeanor, with a bond set at $50,000. Authorities indicated that further charges could be forthcoming as the investigation progressed.
The Huntsville Police Department urged anyone with information about the incident, particularly those who attended the party, to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation. Sergeant John Thompson was designated as the contact person for tips and information related to the case. The community, shaken by the violence, mourned the loss of two young lives and hoped for justice to be served for the victims and their families.
