On November 18, 2024, at approximately 8:53 p.m., a tragic incident occurred in Homestead, Florida, resulting in the death of 23-year-old Brendan Roger Francois and the injury of a 16-year-old female. Homestead Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the area of 653 SW 8th Street, where they discovered Francois suffering from gunshot wounds and the teenage girl with a graze wound. Despite efforts by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Francois was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigations revealed that prior to the shooting, Francois had visited his mother's home with the teenage girl. After sharing a meal, they left to visit a nearby store. As they walked back home, they were approached by a man who identified himself as Louis Edward Harris Jr. Harris, 27, confronted Francois, stating, "That's my girl," before firing a single gunshot that fatally struck Francois. The teenage girl was grazed by a bullet on her left wrist.
Following the shooting, Harris fled the scene. Through witness statements and surveillance footage, authorities identified Harris as the suspect. He was arrested on November 20, 2024, and charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and criminal mischief. Harris is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond set to be determined.
This incident has deeply affected the Homestead community, especially given that Francois's mother, Yvelouse Chery, had previously lost her husband to gun violence in the same area in 2019. She expressed her grief and called for justice for her son, emphasizing the need for action to address the ongoing gun violence in the community.
