On a summer evening in Des Moines, Iowa, what should have been a celebratory time turned into a tragedy. James Patton, a 41-year-old Black or African American man, was on his way to his mother's 68th birthday party on July 21, 2016. At approximately 6:00 p.m., in the parking lot behind a convenience store in the 1400 block of East Ovid Avenue, Patton was shot multiple times.
