Leonard Scherger, a 33-year-old White/Caucasian man and the city marshal of Hartford, Wisconsin, was killed in the line of duty on the night of May 21, 1904. Contemporary records place the shooting at Hartford's railroad freight depot at about 10:20 to 10:30 p.m., rather than on June 18. Scherger had served with the Hartford Police Department for approximately two years and was making his rounds when three suspicious strangers were noticed near the railroad yards.
