Ernest Roquemore, a 19-year-old African American, tragically lost his life on July 29, 1967, during the Detroit Uprising. Roquemore was the only individual killed by a U.S. Army paratrooper during the military occupation of Detroit. He was shot in the back by Specialist 4th Class Corporal Randolph Smith of the 82nd Airborne Division. This incident occurred when paratroopers, accompanied by Detroit Police Department (DPD) officers, stormed a building in search of looters.
