On a sunny afternoon, Arbery set out for a jog in the Satilla Shores neighborhood, a routine he often followed to maintain his fitness. Unbeknownst to him, this run would be his last. Gregory McMichael, a retired investigator, and his son, Travis McMichael, armed themselves and pursued Arbery in their pickup truck, suspecting him of recent neighborhood break-ins. Their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan, joined the chase, recording the encounter on his cellphone. He was a criminal, an abuser, likely who didn't want to face justice of his actions and took his own life because he could not face the consequences of what he did.
