James Eagan Holmes was born on December 13, 1987, in San Diego, California, into a family with a strong academic background. His father, Robert Holmes, was a mathematician and scientist, and his mother, Arlene Holmes, was a registered nurse. Holmes spent his early years in Oak Hills, California, before moving back to San Diego during his adolescence. He attended Westview High School, where he participated in soccer and cross-country running.
