On April 30, 2017, a day that began with the promise of a pleasant outing to Buckroe Beach, 34-year-old Keir Johnson and her infant daughter, 8-month-old Chloe Johnson, vanished from Hampton, Virginia. Keir had informed her mother of her plans to meet a friend at the beach, but they never made it to their destination. Concern mounted when Keir, who was known for being in regular contact with her loved ones, failed to communicate with her family. The following day, her family officially reported both her and baby Chloe as missing, setting in motion a search that would span years and leave a family grappling with uncertainty. The initial days of their disappearance were filled with desperate hope, but as time passed with no word, the sense of foreboding grew among their family and the community. The investigation into the disappearance of Keir and Chloe gained momentum, yet answers remained elusive. Eleven days after they were last seen, an AMBER Alert was issued for Chloe on May 11, 2017. A significant development occurred on May 14, 2017, when Keir's black 2013 Kia Optima was discovered abandoned in a trailer park in the neighboring city of Newport News. This discovery prompted the Newport News Police Department to take over the investigation. Despite searches of the area surrounding the abandoned vehicle, there was no sign of the missing mother and daughter. The AMBER Alert was terminated about a week after it was issued, but the case remained an active and urgent investigation, with authorities and Keir's family, including her twin sister, pleading for any information that could lead to their whereabouts. For years, the case grew cold, a painful reality for a family left without answers. Investigators, however, continued their work, compiling 21 binders of information. A major breakthrough finally came in February 2025, nearly eight years after Keir and Chloe disappeared. Authorities arrested Carlos Johnson Jr., Chloe's father and Keir's ex-boyfriend, during a traffic stop. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their disappearance. Investigators revealed that Carlos had been a person of interest for some time and that he and Keir were separated and had disputes over child support. Court documents alleged that in the months before they vanished, Carlos had made disturbing internet searches on topics such as "how to avoid child support" and "how much rat poison is needed to kill a human". The case against him is proceeding as a homicide investigation, a difficult conclusion for a family who had hoped for their return. Although an arrest has been made, the bodies of Keir and Chloe have never been found, and the case remains a poignant and unresolved tragedy for their loved ones and the community.
