In the early summer of 2016, a 27-year-old mother of two, Jamie Haggard, vanished from Kenmore, Washington, sparking a years-long investigation that would ultimately uncover a heartbreaking family betrayal. Haggard was last seen on June 8, 2016. In the days leading up to her disappearance, she had been living with her half-brother, David Haggard, and her boyfriend. Family members grew concerned when they were unable to contact her, which was unusual as she typically spoke with her mother every other day. Her cell phone and credit cards went unused, and she was officially reported missing on June 17, 2016. The initial investigation was fraught with uncertainty, though her disappearance was considered suspicious from the start. Investigators learned that Jamie had a volatile relationship with her brother, and she had expressed fear for her life to her boyfriend just before she went missing. The search for Jamie led investigators to conduct multiple searches of the backyard of the Kenmore home where she lived, but these efforts yielded no clues. For nearly two years, her family held onto hope, all while her brother, David, allegedly took steps to cover his tracks, including sending texts to family members pretending to be Jamie so they wouldn't worry. The painful mystery took a significant turn in May 2018 when a road crew cleaning litter in Snohomish County discovered a suitcase containing human remains. The remains were dismembered and partially burned, and it took two months for the medical examiner to identify them as Jamie Haggard through DNA analysis. Her death was officially ruled a homicide by homicidal violence. The discovery of Jamie's remains intensified the focus on her half-brother, David Haggard, who had been a suspect from the beginning of the investigation. A critical piece of evidence emerged from a GPS tracker in a stolen car David had been driving, which placed him near the location where Jamie's body was found. Witnesses recounted the turbulent relationship between the siblings, which often involved arguments about their living situation and drug use. David had reportedly assaulted Jamie shortly before she disappeared. In October 2019, while already in jail on an unrelated arson charge, David Haggard was charged with the second-degree murder of his half-sister. In October 2022, a jury found him guilty, and in December of that year, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the brutal murder and dismemberment of Jamie. The case, which began as a mysterious disappearance, concluded with the painful truth of a life cut short by a trusted family member, leaving a lasting scar on their community and all who knew and loved Jamie Haggard.
