On December 5, 2015, 19-year-old Katelin Michelle Akens was last seen in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She was visiting family from her home in Arizona, where she lived with her fiancée. Her former stepfather, James Branton, was supposed to drive her to Reagan National Airport for her 5:00 p.m. flight home. According to Branton, he dropped her off at the Springfield Town Center, from where she intended to take the metro to the airport. However, there is no evidence that Katelin ever made it to the mall or the airport. She never boarded her flight and has not been seen or heard from since. The circumstances surrounding Katelin's disappearance quickly became suspicious. Her mother received a text message from Katelin's phone stating she was at the airport and her battery was dying. This was followed by more texts a few hours later, which were uncharacteristic of Katelin, claiming she was staying with a friend and needed time alone. Cell phone data indicated these later messages were sent from an area near Interstate 95 in Stafford County, not from the airport. Two days later, her suitcase was discovered in a ditch along River Road in Spotsylvania County, nearly 50 miles from the airport. Inside were her wallet, identification, and plane ticket, but some of her clothing was missing. The investigation focused on her former stepfather, James Branton, the last known person to see her. Authorities stated that his timeline of events did not align with cell phone tower information. He was uncooperative with the police, refusing to allow a search of his phone or take a polygraph test. For years, the case saw little progress. However, in April 2026, Branton was arrested on multiple sex offense charges, with investigators believing Katelin may have been one of his victims. These charges stemmed from events alleged to have occurred years before her disappearance. While the arrest was not directly for her disappearance, law enforcement expressed hope that it was a step toward finding answers in her case. The investigation into what happened to Katelin Akens is ongoing.
