In the late summer of 2015, Glen "Austin" Oldfield II, a 39-year-old man from Louisville, Kentucky, traveled to the Pacific Northwest for a two-week solo camping trip in Washington's vast wilderness. The last known communication from him was a text message sent to his girlfriend on September 17, 2015, indicating he was about to enter the forest. He was expected to return to civilization around October 1, but he never made contact again and was reported missing by his girlfriend on October 2. This marked the beginning of a complex and heart-wrenching search for the man known to his friends and family as Austin. The first significant break in the case came on October 13, when Oldfield's 1996 Saturn and his campsite were discovered at an entrance to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southern Washington. This discovery prompted an exhaustive search of the rugged terrain by the Skamania County Sheriff's Office, involving dozens of searchers and dog teams over several days. Prior to his vehicle being officially found, unsettling reports had emerged. Two days after his last text, on September 19, a pair of hunters encountered Oldfield near Lone Butte. They described him as seeming lost and disoriented; when they offered to guide him back to a main road, he reportedly became frightened and ran back into the forest. Further complicating the timeline, new information surfaced more than a year later, in January 2017. His family learned that on the same day he encountered the hunters, Oldfield had also been picked up by a father and daughter. They stated that while he was friendly, he wasn't making much sense. They gave him a ride east toward the Trout Lake area, a different location from where his car and the initial searches were focused. This revelation provided his family with renewed hope but also highlighted that the primary search efforts may have been concentrated in the wrong place. The investigation, co-handled by authorities in both Skamania County, Washington, and Louisville, Kentucky, has been fraught with perplexing details. The conflicting encounters on September 19—one where he fled from help and another where he accepted a ride—paint a confusing picture of his state of mind. Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, leaving a painful void for a family still seeking answers about what happened to Glen "Austin" Oldfield II in the dense forests of Washington.
