In the autumn of 2007, Manuel "Manny" Salado, a 33-year-old U.S. Army Reservist, vanished from his home in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He had recently come home to his wife, Exondia Jaye Salado, after finishing Army Basic Training. Salado was officially reported missing when he failed to appear for his scheduled weekend Army Reserve drills. His personal belongings, including his cell phone, wallet, passport, and military ID, were all discovered left behind at his residence. The day he was last seen, October 8, 2007, Salado had sought refuge with a friend, expressing a dire fear that his wife was attempting to kill him. Despite his initial plan to stay the night, a phone conversation with Exondia convinced him to return to his own home. He was never seen or heard from again. The investigation into Manuel Salado's disappearance took a dark turn as authorities began to focus on his wife, Exondia. Friends of Exondia came forward with disturbing accounts of confessions she had allegedly made to them. She reportedly told two separate friends that she had shot her husband. According to these accounts, she then placed his body in a large plastic container, keeping it in their apartment for about a week before moving it to a different location outside the city where she burned it on a grill. The investigation uncovered unsettling internet searches on Exondia's computer for phrases such as "how to dismember a human body" and information regarding the decomposition of a human body. One of Exondia's former lovers would later testify that she had confessed to him that she "cooked" her husband after shooting him. In December of 2008, Exondia Salado was located and arrested in Florida, more than a year after her husband was last seen. She was charged with the murder of Manuel Salado. During her trial in April 2011, her defense team argued that Manuel was not deceased but had instead traveled to his native country, the Dominican Republic, to be with another woman. Despite the absence of a body, the jury found Exondia guilty of first-degree murder. She was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. To this day, the remains of Manuel Salado have never been located, leaving his case a somber tale of a soldier's disappearance that led to a chilling murder conviction.
