On May 28, 2012, a day meant for enjoying the outdoors, 13-year-old Jacob Steven Whitlock vanished from Camas, Washington. He was on a fishing trip on the Columbia River with his stepfather and step-grandfather, a recreational outing that would soon turn tragic. The boat they were in was anchored near the eastern side of Lady Island when they decided to move to a new spot. As they attempted to pull up the anchor, it became stuck. The effort to dislodge it using the boat's engine caused the vessel to lose steering, and the stern was pulled underwater, quickly swamping the boat and throwing all three occupants into the water. The two adults were rescued from the cold river by other fishermen who were nearby, but Jacob, a boy with blond hair and blue eyes, could not be found. An extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched by multiple agencies, including deputies from both Clark and Multnomah counties. For days, rescue boats scoured the area, and specialized equipment like sonar and an echo sounder were used in the desperate attempt to locate the teenager. At the time of the incident, Jacob was wearing a t-shirt, a University of Washington hooded sweatshirt, a yellow rain jacket, and gray sweatpants. Tragically, despite the exhaustive efforts, the search did not lead to his recovery. The investigation into Jacob Whitlock's disappearance concluded that he is presumed to have drowned in the river. Authorities stated that while there were personal flotation devices on the boat, none of the three individuals were wearing them when the boat capsized. The incident was a heartbreaking accident that has left his family and community with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. Though his body was never recovered, the case is classified as a presumed drowning, a tragic end to a young life full of promise. The Clark County Sheriff's Office investigated the case, and no criminal charges were anticipated in the aftermath of the event.
