On a seemingly ordinary morning in Bellingham, Washington, 28-year-old Marcia Lynn Joyce, a mother of two, vanished from her own backyard. It was August 30, 1978, and Marcia was at her home on Everson Goshen Road with her two young children. Her husband had driven into Bellingham to run an errand at the bank. Marcia, known to her loved ones as Marci, went outside to hang a basket of laundry because her dryer was broken. Sometime after she stepped out, her son went to find her, but she was gone. Marcia Joyce has not been seen or heard from since that day. The circumstances surrounding her disappearance grew more perplexing when her husband arrived at the Northwestern Commercial Bank on Alabama Street. He went to make a withdrawal from the family's account, only to be told that all the money had been taken out. This significant withdrawal had likely occurred a couple of days before Marcia went missing. Upon returning to an empty home and learning his wife was missing, he contacted the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office but was reportedly told he needed to wait 24 hours to file an official report. An initial search of the area by deputies commenced, but tragically, no trace of Marcia was ever found. Decades later, the case of Marcia Joyce remains an unsolved and painful mystery. Investigators have been left with several unsettling possibilities: that Marcia was abducted, that she met with foul play, or that she chose to leave on her own. Her family has consistently stated they do not believe she would have ever abandoned her children. The mystery of the emptied bank account adds a layer of complexity, with no confirmation as to who made the withdrawal. Over the years, the Sheriff's Office has revisited the cold case, conducting new interviews and even bringing in cadaver dogs to search the property, but these efforts yielded no new leads. The central facts of the case remain as they were in 1978: a young mother disappeared from the perceived safety of her home, leaving behind her children and a life that, from the outside, appeared normal, creating a void of unanswered questions that has haunted her family and community for decades.
