In the late summer of 1993, a 14-year-old girl named Misty Dawn Thompson disappeared from her foster home in Woodland, Washington. She was a ward of the state, living with a foster family in what was later described as a troubled environment. On August 19, 1993, Misty left the residence with a family friend and was never seen by her family again. A few days later, on August 24, she made a phone call to her foster parents, stating that she was alright but did not disclose her location. This would be the last time anyone is known to have heard from her. At the time of her disappearance, Misty was described as being 5'3" tall and weighing 110 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a purple sweatshirt, white shorts, white socks, and white shoes. The circumstances surrounding Misty’s disappearance were complicated by issues within her foster home. Reports later emerged that the foster home's license was eventually revoked due to inappropriate relationships involving the children in their care. Specifically, there had been complaints about an adult son-in-law of the foster parents who also resided in the home. This individual, a Mexican citizen who was facing deportation, had allegedly been spending time with Misty. Social workers had requested that the man move out of the home, and he left around the same time that Misty disappeared, leading to speculation that she may have left with him. This has led some to believe she may have been taken to Mexico. Years after she vanished, Misty's case remains unsolved and is shrouded in mystery. Her foster mother later claimed to have received a call in 1997 from a U.S. government official in Mexico who informed her that Misty had died, but this has never been officially confirmed. The case is classified by many agencies as an endangered runaway, and while it is possible she left on her own, the circumstances of her disappearance are considered mysterious. The Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office continues to have an open case for Misty, and in more recent years, authorities have reportedly located the person of interest and involved Interpol in their investigation. Despite these efforts, the definitive whereabouts of Misty Dawn Thompson, and what happened to her after that final phone call in August of 1993, remain unknown.
