In the fall of 1998, Nguyet Minh Nguyen, a 33-year-old mother, was on the cusp of a new chapter in her life. A resident of Seattle, Washington, she was preparing to marry her fiancé. On the evening of November 9th, she told her mother she was leaving their home to meet him. This was the last time her family would ever see her. Nguyet and her fiancé had plans to fly to Reno, Nevada, the very next day to be married. When she did not return and could not be contacted, her concerned family filed a missing person report with the King County Sheriff's Office on November 10, 1998, the day she was supposed to be celebrating her wedding. The initial joy and anticipation surrounding her marriage quickly turned into a deep and desperate worry for her safety and whereabouts. The investigation into Nguyet's sudden disappearance began immediately, and a significant discovery was made two days after she was last seen. Her white Acura was found abandoned in the parking lot of a casino and restaurant in the nearby city of Tukwila. This finding was an ominous sign for detectives, who began to suspect that she had met with foul play. Attention soon turned toward her ex-boyfriend, Phan Kim Seng. When questioned by investigators, Seng denied having any knowledge of what happened to Nguyet or any involvement in her disappearance. However, his stories about his activities around the time she went missing were inconsistent and changed upon repeated questioning. Compounding the suspicion, investigators learned of a volatile history between the two; Seng had been accused of assaulting Nguyet less than two months before she vanished after she had tried to end their relationship. Furthermore, in the days that followed her disappearance, Seng was found to have used her debit card at several local bank machines. For years, Nguyet Nguyen's case grew cold, a painful and unresolved mystery for her young daughter and mother. Despite the absence of a body, the evidence led the King County Medical Examiner's Office to officially issue a death certificate for her in 2015. The case, though inactive, was not forgotten. In 2019, detectives with the Major Crimes Unit re-examined the files and evidence. A crucial breakthrough came when an investigator meticulously reviewed hundreds of hours of casino surveillance video from 1998, footage that had been previously viewed but not thoroughly analyzed. The old recordings clearly showed Phan Kim Seng at the casino on the night Nguyet disappeared, directly contradicting the alibis he had provided for two decades. This new evidence led to a significant development: in October 2019, twenty-one years after Nguyet vanished, Phan Kim Seng was arrested and charged with her murder. The story of Nguyet Nguyen is a heartbreaking account of a woman whose bright future was tragically cut short. The investigation into her disappearance is a testament to the persistent nature of police work, demonstrating how a fresh look at old evidence can bring a long-dormant case back to life and move it toward resolution.
