In the late evening of May 27, 1994, 16-year-old Jody Lynn Brant embarked on a solo road trip from her home in Lawrenceville, Georgia, to visit her cousin in Pontiac, Michigan. An independent and spirited teenager, Jody was driving her black 1987 Ford Escort, a car she had purchased with her own earnings from a fast-food job. The journey was a familiar one for Jody, who had previously lived in Michigan and maintained close ties with family there. However, this trip took a distressing turn. The following day, May 28, Jody called her cousin to say she was lost, believing she was near Erie, Ohio, though she may have been in Erie, Michigan, or the Toledo, Ohio, area. Later that same day, a brief message was left on a friend's answering machine in Georgia, with Jody's voice stating she had arrived safely in Pontiac. Investigators now suspect she may have been coerced into making that final call. The discovery of Jody's vehicle on the morning of May 29, 1994, intensified the alarm. Her Ford Escort was found abandoned and intentionally set on fire on a rural road at the intersection of Turk and Consear Roads in Ottawa Lake, Michigan. The fire, which had been started in the front passenger area, had been set sometime after 10 p.m. the previous night. Several details at the scene were troubling to investigators. The keys were still in the ignition, and the driver's seat was pushed all the way back, a position inconsistent with Jody's petite 5'3" stature. A new dent was also found on the car's rear fender. Inside the trunk, her two suitcases, though severely burned, were recovered. Despite an extensive search of the area involving dogs and a helicopter, no trace of Jody was found. The investigation into her disappearance has been handled by multiple agencies, including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. In the days leading up to her disappearance, it was reported that Jody had driven to Michigan with two male friends to transport marijuana, for which she was paid a few hundred dollars. However, it is unknown if this is connected to her vanishing, as her final trip was intended solely as a visit to her cousin. No suspects or persons of interest have ever been publicly named in connection with her case. The circumstances surrounding Jody's disappearance, particularly the discovery of her burned car, lead authorities to suspect foul play, and her case is being treated as a potential homicide. The unsettling phone calls, the condition and location of her car, and the lack of any contact since have left her family with unanswered questions and a case that remains unsolved decades later.
