In the summer of 1981, a 14-year-old girl named Carla Kaylene Owens vanished from the small community of Clearwater, Washington. On June 30th, she left her family's home in Kalaloch to take a babysitting job approximately 10 miles away. It was arranged that she would care for an infant over the Independence Day weekend. Carla, described as a quiet child, was reportedly driven to the job by a transient logger named Kenneth Barry, accompanied by the baby's mother, Katherine Tangan. After dropping Carla at the trailer, Barry and Tangan went to a bar in the nearby town of Forks. This would be the last time Carla was ever seen. When the baby's mother returned to her trailer later that evening, she discovered a disturbing scene. Carla was gone, and the infant was alone, seemingly uncared for for some time. The living room floor was stained with blood, and a broken, blood-spattered Galliano liqueur bottle lay on the floor. Despite these alarming discoveries, neither the authorities nor Carla's parents were immediately notified. A note was found suggesting Carla had returned home, and because she sometimes stayed away for days, her family did not realize she was missing for four days. The subsequent investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office soon focused on Kenneth Barry. A search of his pickup truck revealed bloodstains and pieces of glass from a Galliano bottle, matching the evidence found at the trailer. While the blood type matched Carla's, DNA testing was not available in 1981 to confirm it was hers. A witness also reported seeing Barry digging a hole at a ranch site with a wrapped bundle in his truck, but a search of the area yielded nothing. Barry was never charged in connection with Carla's disappearance and died in 1987. The case grew cold over the years but was officially reopened in 2007, prompted by a consultant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Despite renewed efforts, including a search of a wooded area in 2008, no trace of Carla has ever been found. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance, which remains an unsolved and heart-wrenching mystery for her family and community.
