On a spring day in Asotin, Washington, 12-year-old Christina Lee White vanished while attending the annual Asotin County Fair on April 28, 1979. Known to her friends and family as Chrissy, she was last seen wearing blue jeans, red leather tennis shoes, and possibly a tan and pink striped shirt. Earlier that day, Christina had attended the fair's parade with her mother and younger sister. Around 2:30 p.m., she called her mother from a friend's house, complaining of feeling ill from the heat. Her mother, unable to pick her up at that moment, advised her to rest and then come home when she felt better. That was the last time they ever spoke. Accounts of when she was last seen vary, with some friends reporting they saw her at the fairgrounds as late as 10:30 p.m. and believed she was on her way home. Christina was riding her brand-new, white 10-speed Schwinn bicycle on the day she disappeared; it was a birthday present she had received just eight weeks prior. The bicycle, which had a basket on the front and distinct three-inch wing nuts on the front wheels, has never been found. Weeks after she went missing, a troubling discovery was made when some of her school papers were found scattered at a farm on the outskirts of Asotin. Christina was a young girl with plans for her future; she had two camping trips scheduled for the upcoming summer, intended to try out for baseball, and was looking forward to spending a month with her father. Authorities do not believe she ran away. Christina's disappearance marked the beginning of a series of unsolved cases in the Lewis-Clark Valley between 1979 and 1982 that have troubled the region for decades. Her case is believed by investigators to be potentially connected to the 1981 murder of University of Idaho student Kristin David, the 1982 disappearances of Steven Pearsall, and the murders of stepsisters Kristina Nelson and Jacqueline "Brandy" Miller. Over the years, the investigation into Christina's disappearance has shifted focus. Initially centered on the fairgrounds, it later included the friend's home from which she made her final phone call to her mother. This reevaluation came after law enforcement discovered a connection between that location and a person of interest in the later disappearances at the Lewiston Civic Theater. Despite the passage of time and renewed investigative efforts, including the use of advanced DNA testing on evidence from related cases, Christina's whereabouts remain unknown, and her case is an enduring mystery.
