George Jarrett Helm Jr., a 26-year-old Native Hawaiian musician and activist, vanished at sea with his friend and distant cousin, James 'Kimo' Mitchell, on March 7, 1977. The two men were last seen in the turbulent waters between the islands of Kahoolawe and Maui in Hawaii. Their disappearance became a symbol of the burgeoning Hawaiian sovereignty movement and the struggle to reclaim the sacred island of Kahoolawe from military use.
