James Kimo Mitchell, 25, was a Maui native with a deep connection to the land and sea. Born in Keanae on February 15, 1952, he grew up in a family that cultivated taro and lived off the land, fostering in him a strong sense of self-sufficiency. An accomplished athlete, Mitchell excelled at swimming and was a star football player at Baldwin High School.
