On December 4, 2001, 18-year-old Kyle Chapman and two fellow Kansas State University students, Christopher Shipley, 18, and Timothy Michael Bennett, 19, went missing in Riley County, Kansas. The three friends, all experienced sailors and qualified sailing instructors, decided to take Chapman's yellow fifteen-foot racing sailboat out on Tuttle Creek Lake after their classes.
