On April 18, 2002, four-year-old Kristina Thay Nguyen, her three-year-old brother John Nguyen, and their 26-year-old mother, Van 'Stephanie' Nguyen, disappeared from Cincinnati, Ohio. Stephanie Nguyen had left behind notes for her husband and parents indicating that her failed marriage had led her to a state of despair. In the notes, she expressed her intention to take her own life and the lives of her children by driving into the Ohio River near the Grand Victoria Casino.
