On the evening of December 31, 2012, a 27-year-old man named Benjamin Lloyd Coffey made a phone call to a friend at approximately 5:15 p.m. During the call, he mentioned he was in Richmond, Virginia, and was on his way home. At the time of his disappearance, Coffey was described as a white male with brown hair and hazel eyes, standing at 5'6" and weighing around 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a tan coat, blue jeans, and brown leather boots. A notable characteristic is a tattoo of the symbol for the band Coheed and Cambria on the inside of his right arm. The day after his last known contact, on January 1, 2013, Coffey's full-sized van was discovered abandoned. The vehicle was located on Hobbs Hole Drive, near a Holiday Inn Express in Tappahannock, Virginia. Inside the van, with one of the windows rolled down, were some of his personal belongings, including his cell phone and his dog, who was found with some food and water. Though Coffey did not have a permanent residence and may have been living out of his van, he was known to frequent the areas of Gloucester and Middlesex County and owned a sailboat that was moored in Deltaville, Virginia. Despite the passage of time, the circumstances surrounding Benjamin Coffey's disappearance remain a mystery. His father was notified about the discovery of the van on January 3rd and does not believe his son simply walked away. An investigation was launched, and at one point, a bloodhound reportedly traced his scent to a swamp before the trail went cold. His family has offered a reward for information that could lead to his whereabouts or to an arrest and conviction in his case. The Tappahannock Police Department continues to list his case as unsolved. An overview of the case reveals a young man who seemingly vanished after a routine phone call, leaving behind his vehicle, personal effects, and beloved dog, with no clear indication of what might have happened to him.
