In the autumn of 2009, a family was left with questions that would linger for over a decade when Robert John Aho, a 31-year-old male, vanished from a rural part of Ontario. On the afternoon of October 12, 2009, Robert, also known as Robbie, was at the Land O' Lakes Cottages in Marten River. He had been with his father, helping to pack up a trailer. Around 1:00 p.m., he walked away from the cottages, heading west on Highway 64 in the direction of Field, Ontario.
At the time he was last seen, he was wearing a blue and white long-sleeved Toronto Maple Leafs shirt, a black vest, blue jeans, and a blue baseball cap. He was carrying a duffel bag and a packsack which contained a change of clothes and a camera. Critically, Robert had epilepsy and relied on medication to manage his condition; he only had a couple of days' worth with him when he disappeared.
The initial days following Robert's disappearance were filled with urgent activity as family, friends, and law enforcement began to search the vast and rugged landscape. His father started searching along the ditches of highways 64 and 11 just days after he was last seen. The Ontario Provincial Police initiated their official search shortly after, deploying ATVs, a helicopter for aerial views, and canine units. The search intensified when some of Robert's belongings began to be discovered. His boots were found on a trail near some hydro lines, which prompted a grid search of the surrounding area. A few days after he vanished, more of his belongings were located along Highway 64. The discovery of a Maple Leafs jersey, reported by hunters on a trail off Highway 11, shifted the focus of the search to that new area and a forensics team was brought in. However, the extensive search efforts were later called off after a reported, though unconfirmed, sighting of Robert in North Bay.
Years have passed since Robert Aho was last seen, but the case remains open and the search for answers continues. The initial investigation was extensive, with over 1000 acres being searched by police and dozens of volunteers. Despite these efforts, and the investigation of leads at food banks and hostels, no trace of Robert was found. The family has expressed frustration over the initial delay in the police search. Over the years, the OPP has made renewed appeals to the public for information. In an effort to generate new leads, an age-progression forensic sketch was released, showing what Robert might look like more than a decade after he went missing.
