In the early summer of 2009, 32-year-old Hatice Corbacioglu was filled with hope for the future, centered around a man she had met the previous winter. A Turkish immigrant who had moved to Canada with her family as a teenager, Hatice was a free-spirited and hardworking woman, employed as a forklift operator in a Toronto rubber factory. After two previous marriages had ended, she believed she had found love with Riza Cosa, a welder she met at a party. Their relationship blossomed over several months, prompting Hatice to make multiple trips from her home in Ontario to visit him in New York. On June 13, 2009, she embarked on another such journey, leaving her family's residence in the Bloor Street West and Lansdowne Avenue area of Toronto, intending to spend a few days with Cosa. She was last seen driving her brown 2007 Toyota Corolla, a familiar trip that had always included daily calls to her close-knit family, but this time, the calls never came. The days following her departure turned into weeks of silence, a stark departure from her usual habit of staying in constant contact with family and friends. Concern mounted, and the situation grew more alarming when her Toyota Corolla was discovered abandoned at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City on June 21, 2009. An investigation revealed that an airline ticket to Turkey had been purchased in her name for that same day, but there was no record of her ever boarding that flight or legally entering Turkey. Her bank accounts, cell phone, and social media all went dormant, showing no activity since her disappearance. When her worried family contacted Riza Cosa, his explanations were inconsistent and evasive; one time he claimed she was visiting his family in Turkey, and another time he said she was in southern Arabia, but she was never available to speak. The family's distress was compounded when they learned that Cosa was already married to a woman named Winsome Angela Perez, who had also been reported missing around the same time as Hatice. The sinister nature of the case deepened in May 2010, when the body of Cosa's wife, Winsome Angela Perez, was discovered in a plastic bag at the steel factory where Cosa had worked. With Cosa now a person of interest in both his wife's murder and Hatice's disappearance, an international search for him began, as he had fled to his native Turkey. Shortly after Perez's body was found, news emerged from Turkey that Riza Cosa had died by suicide, having jumped from a tall building. He reportedly left a note that mentioned financial troubles and the mistake of "loving a girl from Canada." Despite this development, no trace of Hatice has ever been found. Authorities strongly suspect she was a victim of foul play, and her case remains an unsolved and endangered missing person investigation. Years have passed with no answers, leaving her family in a painful state of limbo, holding onto the hope of one day learning what happened to the woman who was the cherished backbone of their family.
