She was wearing a gray and beige checkered coat, a dark blue polka dot dress, a red cardigan, and pointed-toe boots. The hours following her last sighting only deepened the mystery surrounding her whereabouts. Around 5:30 p.m., Helga placed a telephone call to a friend's house, but her friend was not home. The person who answered the phone was the same woman who had seen her running on the street earlier that afternoon. Back at the Kaserer home, concern turned to panic when Helga did not return for dinner, something her family described as being very out of character for her. Her worried mother began calling Helga's friends, and when no one had any information, the police were contacted, marking the beginning of a search that would span decades.
