In the summer of 2018, a five-year-old girl from Brampton, Ontario, named Tatianna Bijou Cuevas, embarked on what was supposed to be a two-week vacation to Europe with her non-custodial father, John Varga Cuevas. Tatianna, a young girl described as Black, with brown curly hair and brown eyes, left Toronto with her father on July 29, 2018. Her mother, who had full custody, had reluctantly agreed to the trip with the understanding that they would return on August 12, 2018. However, that day came and went with no sign of Tatianna or her father, sparking a years-long international search. The planned itinerary included stops in Germany and France, but investigations soon revealed a much different and more alarming journey. After leaving Toronto, Tatianna and her father were spotted in several locations, including Paris, France; Budapest, Hungary; Dubai; and Nigeria. The last confirmed sighting of the pair was on August 4, 2018, on video surveillance at an airport in Togo, West Africa. Two days after their scheduled return, with no communication, Tatianna's mother reported her daughter missing to the Peel Regional Police on August 14, 2018. A Canada-wide warrant was subsequently issued for John Varga Cuevas for parental abduction. For years, the case remained active, with family and authorities working tirelessly to locate the missing child. The search was complex, spanning multiple continents and involving international law enforcement agencies. Tatianna's mother continued to advocate for her daughter's return, pleading with the public for any information that could help bring her home. The case of Tatianna Cuevas is a distressing example of international parental child abduction. It highlights the immense challenges faced by families and law enforcement when a child is taken across international borders, turning a planned vacation into a prolonged and painful search for a missing loved one. After a lengthy and difficult period, a social media post in October 2022 indicated that Tatianna had been found safe and was being reunited with her family.
