In the spring of 2021, a heart-wrenching story unfolded involving a 19-year-old female student from Buffalo State College named Saniyya Dennis. An honor student studying engineering, she was last seen leaving her campus residence hall on the evening of April 24, 2021. Her sudden disappearance prompted a widespread search and a great deal of concern from her family, friends, and the wider community. The initial investigation by university police quickly expanded to include multiple local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as they worked together to piece together her last known movements and bring her home safely. The investigation revealed a sequence of events leading up to her disappearance. On the day she was last seen, Saniyya had reportedly been in an argument with her boyfriend, which resulted in their relationship ending. Distraught, she made numerous attempts to contact him. In the hours that followed, she confided in another male friend, expressing thoughts of suicide. Despite her friend's attempts to dissuade her, Saniyya's actions suggested a troubling plan. She was seen on surveillance video discarding personal items that indicated she did not intend to return to her dorm before taking a bus to Niagara Falls State Park by herself. Her last confirmed sighting was from park cameras showing her on a trail near Goat Island shortly after midnight on April 25. Her cell phone last pinged in that area before its connection to the network ceased around 1:20 a.m. An extensive search of the park was conducted, with search dogs reportedly losing her scent near the water's edge. Based on the review of evidence, including her final conversations and movements, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced they believed Saniyya died by suicide, although her body has not been found. While authorities have stated that they found no evidence of criminality, the investigation will remain open until she is located. Her family has publicly questioned the official conclusion, expressing their belief that foul play may have been involved and have voiced concerns about the investigation. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a narrative of a promising young life that ended in profound sadness and unanswered questions for her loved ones.
