In the summer of 2018, a 43-year-old father of five named Ryan William Duncan vanished from the North Okanagan region of British Columbia. Originally from Manitoba, he had recently relocated to Calgary for a new job on July 1st of that year. On July 17, 2018, the day he was last seen, an RCMP officer found him on the side of a road near Lumby, British Columbia, as his rental car had run out of gas. The officer, noting that Duncan seemed depressed but was a very nice person, drove him into the village to get fuel and charge his phone. During this time, Ryan made several calls to his mother, asking for money. He was last seen walking away from a motel in Lumby, presumably heading back towards his car. The circumstances surrounding Ryan's disappearance are unsettling. Four days after he was last seen, his rental car was discovered in the nearby city of Vernon with a smashed window, but there was no trace of Ryan. Authorities suspect that someone other than Duncan drove the vehicle to Vernon. Since that day, there has been no activity on his bank or credit cards. It has been suggested that prior to his disappearance, Ryan had been struggling with depression and had turned to alcohol and drugs. There are also reports that he may have become involved with a "bad crowd" and that his trip to British Columbia might have been connected to a "Mr. Big" sting operation in Manitoba involving a missing police officer, although this has not been officially confirmed. Ryan, who sometimes used the aliases William Duncan, Bill Mancana, or Bill Duncan, was known to be a skilled outdoorsman with a high IQ. At the time he went missing, he was described as a Caucasian male, standing six feet one inch tall, weighing between 170 and 190 pounds, with brown hair and hazel or blue eyes. He had a mustache and goatee at the time. His case remains an open and active investigation with the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, and there is evidence that suggests he may be deceased. The overview of this case points to a man who had recently started a new chapter in his life but was also dealing with personal struggles. His disappearance after a chance encounter with law enforcement and the discovery of his abandoned, damaged vehicle has left his family with many unanswered questions.
