On October 21, 2008, 63-year-old George Donald Everett, a male from Manitoba, was on a boat in Lake Winnipeg with two other people. The vessel had departed from Poplar Point the previous day to take buoys out of the lake. During the night, the boat encountered mechanical problems and could not proceed. As the early morning hours of October 21st arrived, the weather took a turn for the worse, and the boat was battered by waves reaching up to ten feet high. The relentless waves caused the boat to take on water and eventually capsize in the vastness of Lake Winnipeg, approximately 15 miles southeast of the Poplar River, between Marchand Point and George Island. In the struggle for survival that ensued, the two other passengers managed to swim to the safety of Marchand's Point, where they were later rescued. Tragically, George Donald Everett did not make it to shore with them and disappeared into the turbulent waters of the lake. He has not been seen or heard from since that harrowing day. At the time of his disappearance, George was described as being 5'10" tall and weighing 298 pounds, with a heavy build. He had short, grey hair and brown eyes. When he was last seen, he was wearing black glasses, a black baseball cap, a black nylon zippered bomber-style jacket that had a "Berens River" patch on the back, black jogging pants, a maroon long-sleeved shirt, and black runners. Despite the passage of time, he has never been located and is presumed to have drowned in the tragic accident. The case of George Donald Everett is a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of nature and the profound loss experienced by those left behind when a loved one vanishes.
