Onboard this flight was a 22-year-old male, Nathen David Kryger, a passenger on a trip that was scheduled to travel from Thompson to Winnipeg, with several stops in between communities. The helicopter, carrying a pilot and two other passengers in addition to Kryger, departed from Thompson at 3:20 p.m. and later left Warren's Landing for its final leg to Winnipeg at approximately 5:20 p.m. The pilot had communicated that the weather conditions were poor and estimated an 8:00 p.m. arrival in Winnipeg. The last radio contact with the pilot occurred at 5:50 p.m., with the helicopter's location reported as being over Poplar River. After this final communication, the aircraft vanished. The disappearance of the helicopter prompted an extensive search effort involving the Canadian Air Search and Rescue, as well as private and police aircraft. For two weeks, crews scoured the remote area around Lake Winnipeg, hoping to find any sign of the missing aircraft and the four individuals on board. Despite their exhaustive efforts, no trace of the helicopter or its occupants was immediately found. The official search was ultimately suspended on November 17, 1972, leaving the families of the missing with unanswered questions and the harsh reality that their loved ones were likely lost to the unforgiving wilderness. The search was planned to resume in the spring of 1973. In the spring of the following year, the body of the helicopter's pilot was recovered on the shore of Lake Winnipeg, confirming the tragic fate of the flight. Nathen Kryger and the other remaining passenger, however, were never found. It is presumed that they tragically perished as a result of the helicopter crash. Authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected in the disappearance. The case serves as a somber reminder of the perils of travel in remote and challenging environments and the profound and lasting impact such incidents have on the families and communities of those who are lost.
