In the vast and often unpredictable wilderness of northern Saskatchewan, a heroic act tragically marked the last time Raymond Ernest Sewap was ever seen. On June 18, 1983, a then 32-year-old Raymond embarked on a boat trip across the waters of Amisk Lake, not far from Sturgeon Weir. He was accompanied by William Fosseneuve and Agnes Sewap, and their destination was Denare Beach. The journey, however, took a perilous turn as the weather shifted and the lake's surface grew rough and turbulent. The unsettling waters led to a dire situation when William Fosseneuve was thrown overboard into the cold lake. Without hesitation, Raymond Ernest Sewap made a courageous decision and entered the water in an attempt to rescue his companion. Agnes Sewap, the remaining person on the boat, witnessed the harrowing moment both men struggled in the tumultuous waves before they both submerged beneath the surface. Tragically, neither Raymond nor William resurfaced. Despite the passage of many years, the case of Raymond Ernest Sewap officially remains an active missing person case. The account of what happened on that fateful day in 1983 provides a painful clarity to his loved ones about his final moments, yet offers no solace in the form of recovery. The official record describes him as being of Aboriginal descent, standing 168 cm (5'6") tall, and weighing approximately 70 kg (154 lbs), with brown eyes. The narrative of his disappearance is a somber reminder of the unforgiving power of nature and the profound bravery of an individual who sacrificed his own life in an attempt to save another.
