In the early summer of 1974, a 27-year-old man named Brian Guberman, who was living in Edmonton, Alberta, seemed to be on the cusp of a new adventure. A creative and educated individual, Brian had moved to Edmonton from his home in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the previous year to work in social services for the Big Sister's Organization. In June of 1974, he penned a letter to his family, the last they would ever receive, mentioning his plans to do some traveling and expressing a hope that he might see them soon. He had recently renewed his passport, lending weight to his travel plans. However, after this last communication, Brian, a man with brown hair, brown eyes who wore glasses, vanished and was officially reported missing in July of that year. Brian was a man of many talents and a compassionate spirit. Born and raised in Winnipeg, he was a graduate of the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba, holding a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Teacher's Certificate. Before his work in social services, he had traveled extensively through Europe and worked as a teacher. He was also an active actor and a singer/guitarist, known for his performances in various productions. His sister fondly remembers him as a charming date at an event just a couple of years before his disappearance. Brian stood at 5'10" with a medium build and had a small, bluish birthmark on the fleshy part of his thumb. When he disappeared, so did his distinctive black and yellow 1964 Volkswagen van, which has never been located. The weeks turned into months, and the months into decades, yet no trace of Brian or his vehicle has ever been found. His family's hope that he was simply off on another adventure slowly turned to a painful and enduring mystery. Law enforcement agencies, including the Edmonton Police Service, have kept his file active over the years, but the trail went cold almost as soon as it began. The case of Brian Guberman is a portrait of a life interrupted. A man with a history of connecting with people, through his teaching, his social work, and his art, suddenly disconnected from everyone who knew him without a clear reason. The lack of any evidence or contact since June 1974 leaves his loved ones with unanswered questions about what happened to him after he wrote his final letter home.
