In the late summer of 2024, concern grew for an elderly man from a small community in Ontario. George Guilbeault, an 89-year-old male, was last seen in North Cobalt on August 2, 2024. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance began to unfold the following day, painting a worrying picture for his family and local authorities. The initial search for Mr. Guilbeault focused on areas he was familiar with and the activities he was known to enjoy, which led investigators to the shores of a vast, interprovincial lake. The investigation took a significant turn on the morning of August 3, 2024, when the Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an abandoned boat on Lake Temiskaming. Authorities quickly determined that the vessel was registered to George Guilbeault. This discovery led them to the Haileybury boat launch, where they located Mr. Guilbeault's truck and boat trailer. With his vehicle and boat accounted for but Mr. Guilbeault still missing, the focus of the search intensified on the waters of Lake Temiskaming. In response to these findings, the Ontario Provincial Police escalated their search efforts. The OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was dispatched to the area to conduct a thorough search of the lake. Police issued a public appeal for information, asking anyone who might have seen George Guilbeault on Lake Temiskaming between the Haileybury boat launch and Burnt Island from August 2nd to August 3rd to come forward. Despite the recovery of his boat and vehicle, Mr. Guilbeault remained missing, and the search continued. The case remains unresolved, leaving a sense of profound uncertainty for his loved ones and the community.
