In the early summer of 1983, a young Indigenous woman named Rebecca Louisa Guno disappeared from Vancouver, British Columbia. On June 22, the 23-year-old was last seen in the city's Downtown Eastside. Rebecca, who stood 4'11" and had a medium build with long, straight black hair and brown eyes, was wearing a white wool sweater, brown boots, and her glasses on the day she vanished. Her common-law husband saw her as she boarded a city bus with a female friend. Rebecca had told him she was heading to the Lone Star Hotel on Carrall Street to have drinks with friends. However, her actual plan was to meet a man known only as "Josh". She never made it to her intended destination, and after three days with no word, Rebecca was reported missing to the Vancouver Police Department on June 25, 1983. Rebecca, known affectionately as "Becky," was a member of the Nisga'a Nation, born on May 25, 1960, in northwest British Columbia. Her childhood was marked by hardship; she and her brothers were sent to a residential school. At the age of 17, she became a mother to a son, who was then raised by a relative. She later had a second child who died in infancy. In the early 1980s, Rebecca moved to Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, where she faced personal struggles, including drug addiction and involvement in the sex trade. Despite these challenges, those who knew her remembered her as being bubbly and happy. The investigation into Rebecca's disappearance has spanned decades but has yielded few answers. Sometime after she was reported missing, her wallet was discovered several blocks from her residence, though the exact date of this discovery is unknown. The police file on her case has been reviewed on at least three separate occasions, but no significant leads have emerged. The man named "Josh," with whom she had planned to meet, has never been identified or located by authorities. Homicide is suspected in her case, which remains classified as an endangered missing person file. Rebecca's disappearance is one of many unsolved cases of women who vanished from the Downtown Eastside, a significant number of whom were Indigenous. Her case is sadly linked to the victims of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton, and it is believed she may have been one of his victims, though her remains have never been found.
