On that morning, 64-year-old Melvin Hillier informed his family he was heading out for a drive, a routine activity that was not out of the ordinary for him. He left his home around 11:00 a.m. At the time, he was wearing blue jeans, a t-shirt, and a blue windbreaker jacket, along with his glasses. Described as a Caucasian male, standing 5'8" and weighing 170 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes, his familiar presence was a part of the local fabric. However, as the hours turned into evening with no sign of his return, concern mounted, and his family reported him missing later that same day. The investigation into Melvin's whereabouts soon uncovered a series of poignant and perplexing clues. His blue Ford F-150 pickup truck was discovered abandoned on the MV Legionnaire, one of the ferries that travels between Portugal Cove and Bell Island. This discovery prompted a review of the ferry's surveillance footage, which provided the last known images of Melvin. The video showed him on the 1:45 p.m. crossing, walking around the lounge area of the vessel. The final sighting of him on the video was between 1:50 p.m. and 1:57 p.m., as the ferry was mid-crossing. Crucially, there was no footage of him disembarking when the ferry docked. This distressing evidence led investigators to believe it was possible he had fallen from the ferry during its journey. An extensive search was launched, covering the waters and the rugged coastlines in the area, but sadly, no trace of Melvin Hillier was found. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary appealed to the public for any information, particularly from anyone who was on the same ferry crossing and might have observed something that could shed light on his disappearance. The case remains a painful mystery, leaving his loved ones and the wider community with unanswered questions. The sequence of events, from a seemingly normal Sunday drive to the discovery of his abandoned vehicle on a ferry he never appeared to leave, paints a tragic and unresolved picture of the day Melvin Hillier vanished.
