On the evening of Friday, August 28, 1992, 35-year-old Janice Louise Howe departed from her parents' residence in the Fort Garry area of Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was driving her father's blue 1985 Oldsmobile Ciera, telling her parents she would be back. Janice, a Caucasian female with blue eyes and shoulder-length blonde or brown hair, stood at approximately 5'3" and weighed around 140 pounds. At the time she was last seen, she was believed to be wearing a light-colored sweater or jacket, a pink t-shirt with a "South Fork Restaurant" logo on the breast pocket, and black loafer-style shoes. She was also carrying a black leather shoulder purse. Janice had just returned home from work and decided to take her father's car for a drive to unwind. It is not known if she had plans to meet with anyone, and no one has reported seeing her after she left her parents' home. The following morning, Saturday, August 29, 1992, at approximately 10:10 a.m., an Ontario Provincial Police officer discovered the Oldsmobile Ciera Janice had been driving. The vehicle was found abandoned on the side of the road, 19 miles east of Kenora, Ontario. An examination of the car revealed no immediate signs of an assault. However, investigators noted that the rear floor mats and a 4' x 8' tarp were missing from the trunk of the vehicle. This discovery raised concerns and suggested that a struggle or an attempt to conceal something may have occurred. The car's location was also a significant distance from her home, adding to the mystery of her disappearance. Further investigation by law enforcement revealed a perplexing detail that deepened the suspicion of foul play. Janice's father had filled the car with gasoline and recorded the mileage just before she left. Based on this information, investigators were able to determine that the car had been driven for nearly 550 kilometers before it was abandoned. The distance between Winnipeg and where the car was found near Kenora is just over 200 kilometers, indicating the vehicle had traveled an additional 300 kilometers for unknown reasons. The excessive mileage, coupled with the missing items from the car, has led investigators to believe that foul play is a strong possibility in Janice Howe's disappearance. Despite the passage of time, the case remains unsolved, and what began as a quiet evening drive for Janice turned into an enduring mystery.
