In the vast urban landscape of Edmonton, Alberta, a young Indigenous woman named Roxanne Marie Isadore seemed to vanish without a trace. It was June 20, 2008, when the 25-year-old was last definitively seen in the area of 118 Avenue. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as being between 5'0" and 5'1" tall with a slender build, weighing around 110-121 pounds. She had long brown hair that she sometimes dyed red, brown eyes, and wore false front teeth. Distinctive tattoos, including a cross on her right middle finger and a large knife with a snake and heart on her right shin, marked her body, along with a scar on her left shoulder and an appendix scar. Roxanne was known to use several aliases, including Sunshine Courtoreille and Roxanne Blue. Roxanne's life, in the years leading up to her disappearance, was fraught with hardship. A member of the Driftpile Cree Nation, she had moved to Edmonton from Valleyview in 2006, reportedly with her boyfriend. She was a mother to three children, whom she had left in the care of their great-grandmother with the hope of establishing a stable life in the city. However, her family recounts a history of trauma, including abuse she suffered at the hands of a partner, which led to struggles with drug and alcohol dependency. The last time her sister heard from her was in September 2007. After 2007, the regular calls to her family stopped. Her family’s worry grew with the silence, a profound and painful absence in their lives. Years passed with no word from Roxanne, prompting a family member to officially report her missing to the Valleyview RCMP on September 24, 2013. The investigation was later transferred to the Edmonton Police Service. The significant gap between her last contact and the official report created challenges for investigators. One noted difficulty was in accessing her health records for potential clues, as her records as an Indigenous person are federally maintained by Health Canada, complicating the process for municipal police. Despite appeals to the public for information and the case being highlighted by the RCMP as part of a campaign for missing persons, no significant leads have emerged. The case remains an open missing persons investigation, a painful and unresolved chapter for a family left waiting for answers about what happened to Roxanne Marie Isadore.
