In the late summer of 1988, a day on the water turned into a lasting tragedy for the family and friends of Leonard Joseph Kalichak. On September 18, 1988, this male resident of the Dauphin, Manitoba area was at his home near Sifton Beach when he and three other individuals made the decision to take a boat out onto Lake Dauphin. What began as a recreational outing soon took a perilous turn as the group encountered unfavorable weather conditions on the lake. The situation escalated quickly, leading to the boat capsizing in the turbulent water. In the immediate chaos that followed the vessel overturning, Leonard Joseph Kalichak slipped beneath the surface. It is believed that the heavy clothing he was wearing at the time may have contributed to his inability to stay afloat. He was not seen again after disappearing into the water. Following the horrific incident, an extensive and thorough search effort was launched in a desperate attempt to locate Mr. Kalichak. The operation was comprehensive, involving searches by land, air, and water. Teams conducted dragging operations on Lake Dauphin, hoping to find any sign of the missing man. At the time he was last seen, he was described as a Caucasian male with a medium build, light complexion, blonde hair, and blue eyes. He stood approximately six feet one inch tall and weighed around 201 pounds. He was reportedly wearing a black nylon jacket on the day the boat capsized. Despite the exhaustive efforts of all involved in the search, Leonard was never found. The disappearance of Leonard Joseph Kalichak has left a void in the lives of those who knew him, a pain that lingers decades later as evidenced by memorial notices expressing that he is deeply missed. Although his body was never recovered from the waters of Lake Dauphin, the circumstances surrounding the event led authorities to the heartbreaking conclusion that he had drowned. The case remains open with the Dauphin Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The overview of this case is that of a recreational boating trip that ended in tragedy due to adverse weather. Leonard Kalichak went missing after his boat capsized on Lake Dauphin, and despite immediate and comprehensive search efforts, he was never located and is presumed to have drowned.
