In the late summer of 2000, a young boy named Marcus Maury McKay, just eight years old, was in the remote, densely wooded area near Mallard, Manitoba. On July 15th, he was on a hunting trip with his stepfather and three other men. The group reportedly split up, with Marcus accompanying his stepfather. After his stepfather successfully hunted a deer, the decision was made for Marcus to wait with the animal while his stepfather went to get assistance from the others to carry it. When the men returned about an hour later, Marcus was gone. He was last seen in a wooded and marshy area approximately 10 kilometers north of the intersection of Mallard and Bison Roads. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing only a t-shirt and jeans, despite the fact that temperatures in the area were known to drop close to freezing at night. A massive search effort was launched immediately following his disappearance. The remote and challenging terrain, characterized by thick woods and swampland, made the search incredibly difficult. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), members of the Canadian Armed Forces, and numerous volunteers participated, utilizing aircraft and search dogs to comb the rugged wilderness. Despite their extensive efforts, which continued for weeks, no trace of Marcus was ever found. The difficult conditions of the search were highlighted when it was reported that some of the hundreds of civilian volunteers required rescuing themselves after becoming stuck in the swampy land. As the days turned into weeks with no sign of the young boy, the official search was eventually scaled back and then called off. The disappearance of Marcus McKay remains an unsolved case, and he is now presumed to be deceased. The investigation into what happened to him has never been officially closed, and the RCMP have stated they are dedicated to finding answers. Over the years, his family has continued to hope for closure, marking the anniversary of his disappearance with remembrance feasts. In 2023, the Manitoba Métis Federation announced a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to locating Marcus, also unveiling a billboard with his picture near the area he was last seen to remind the public that he has not been forgotten. The case is a haunting one, leaving a family and community with unanswered questions about the fate of a young boy who vanished into the Manitoba wilderness.
