In the late summer of 2006, a sense of unease settled over the rural community of Forrest, Manitoba, with the disappearance of 55-year-old Grant John Moffat. A well-known and respected cattle rancher, Moffat was last seen on August 17 or 18, 2006. On that day, he visited a Fas Gas outlet in Ste. Rose du Lac, where he purchased a fishing licence. He reportedly spent about 20 minutes at the location and showed no signs of being in a hurry. From there, he was believed to be heading to Amaranth to meet friends for a fishing trip. This was the last confirmed sighting of Grant Moffat. Concern for his well-being grew when he failed to show up for a cattle show in Dryden, Ontario, an event friends said he would not have missed. The days following his failure to appear at the cattle show brought a disturbing discovery. On August 20, 2006, Moffat's vehicle, a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, was found abandoned and burned out on a highway near Crane River, approximately 60 kilometers northwest of Ste. Rose du Lac. The discovery of the vehicle intensified the investigation, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began to treat his disappearance as suspicious. In the weeks that followed, extensive searches were conducted by the RCMP, friends, family, and numerous volunteers from the cattle industry. These search parties combed through ditches, bushes, and along creeks, hoping to find any sign of the missing rancher, but their efforts yielded no significant clues. The mystery of Grant Moffat's disappearance has endured for years, leaving his family and friends without answers. Moffat was a freelance writer and photographer for agricultural publications and lived alone on his farm north of Brandon. He was described as a well-liked and respected member of his community, which was evident in the large number of volunteers who dedicated their time to searching for him. Despite the passage of time and the dedicated efforts of law enforcement, including forensic examinations of his vehicle and numerous appeals to the public for information, the case remains unsolved. The circumstances surrounding his last known movements and the subsequent discovery of his burnt-out car point to a troubling scenario, yet no definitive explanation for his disappearance has ever been brought to light. The case is an overview of a man who seemingly vanished after a routine purchase, leaving behind a community searching for answers and a family longing for closure.
