In the summer of 2020, in the remote Island Lake region of northeastern Manitoba, a quiet and gentle 16-year-old girl named Tammy Jerilynn Faith Nattaway vanished. She was last seen in Garden Hill First Nation around the middle of July. Tammy, who was in foster care in Garden Hill, often spent time with her extended family and boyfriend in the neighboring Wasagamack First Nation. The last confirmed sighting by her mother was on July 7, 2020, as Tammy was waiting for a boat to take her to Wasagamack to visit family. There are differing reports on her last exact date seen, with some indicating July 8th or July 14th, and another as late as July 20th. It wasn't until the end of the month that her family and the RCMP were alerted to her disappearance. The news of Tammy's disappearance sent a wave of concern through the close-knit First Nations communities. Hundreds of volunteers from Garden Hill, Wasagamack, St. Theresa Point, and other nearby communities mobilized to search for the missing teen. The search efforts were extensive, covering land, water, and air. Search teams on foot, with K9 units, on ATVs, and in boats scoured the vast and challenging terrain. Divers were also brought in to search the waterways. The RCMP's Major Crime Services took the lead in the official investigation, interviewing over 100 people and following up on numerous tips. Despite the exhaustive searches, the only significant piece of evidence recovered was a sweater believed to be Tammy's, which was found two years after she went missing in Wasagamack. As time passed with no sign of Tammy, the hope of finding her alive began to fade, replaced by a deep sense of loss and a desperate need for answers. Her family described her as a quiet girl who loved to read and listen to music on her phone. She was the eldest of nine siblings and was known for not straying far from home. The RCMP have stated that they suspect foul play is involved in her disappearance, a belief shared by many in the community. The community continues to hold out hope that someone will come forward with information that could bring Tammy home and provide closure for her grieving family. The case of Tammy Nattaway is a heartbreaking story of a young life interrupted, and the enduring pain of a community left with unanswered questions. It highlights the vulnerability of Indigenous women and girls and the profound impact these unresolved cases have on their families and communities.
