On a spring day in 1969, a man named Lawrence Alton Oliver departed from his home in the area of North West River, Newfoundland & Labrador, with the intention of going seal hunting in the vast expanse of Lake Melville. The date was June 11th, and it would be the last time he was ever seen. The day progressed as any other, with the expectation of his return home later that evening. However, as the afternoon wore on, a sense of unease began to settle over those who knew him. At approximately 5:50 p.m. that evening, the Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP received a report that would turn a day of hunting into a lasting mystery. An empty boat was discovered drifting in Lake Melville, near North West Point. Upon investigation, authorities confirmed the boat belonged to Lawrence Alton Oliver. The vessel, once a tool for his livelihood and recreation, was now a silent testament to his sudden and unexplained absence. The vast and often unforgiving waters of the lake held the secrets of his last moments. The prevailing belief among investigators is that a tragic accident occurred while Mr. Oliver was engaged in his seal hunt. It is thought that he somehow fell from his boat into the cold waters of Lake Melville and subsequently drowned. Despite what were undoubtedly extensive search efforts at the time, his body was never located, leaving his family and community without the closure of a final farewell. The case of Lawrence Alton Oliver remains a poignant reminder of the inherent dangers of life on the water and represents one of the many long-unanswered questions of missing persons in the region, a story of a man who went out to sea and never returned.
