In the small community of Kimberley, British Columbia, a profound and lasting mystery began to unfold on June 26, 1969, with the disappearance of 16-year-old Anthony Philip Porter. Known to his loved ones as Philip, the young man was the son of a prominent executive for the Cominco mining company. On that Thursday afternoon, Philip left his family's home on Giegerich Road in the Townsite area around 1:00 p.m. to run a simple errand for his mother, which included picking up groceries. He was expected to return by 5:30 p.m. for dinner, but as the hours passed with no sign of him, his mother's concern grew. She began calling his friends, but none had seen him, and it was uncharacteristic for Philip not to call if he was going to be late. The last confirmed sighting of Philip was of him carrying a bag of groceries near his home. The initial hours of his disappearance quickly escalated from a missing person case to a suspected kidnapping. That evening, the Porter family received a chilling phone call from a man demanding a $100,000 ransom for Philip's safe return. The caller warned his mother not to involve the police, threatening that her son would be killed if she did. This was followed by a typed ransom note, which stated, "BOY ALIVE WELL. MISSES MOTHER. SMARTEN UP IF YOU WANT HIM BACK ALIVE .YOU WERE TOLD NOT TO CALL COPS JUNE 26. DUMB." A massive search was immediately launched, with hundreds of local volunteers and the RCMP scouring the area around Kimberley, but there was no trace of the missing teenager. A few weeks later, another note arrived with instructions for the money drop. Despite extensive efforts by law enforcement, including the use of wiretaps and undercover operations, the case grew cold. The investigation was complicated by the rugged terrain surrounding Kimberley, which includes numerous deep and abandoned mine shafts. Over the years, various sightings of Philip were reported, but none could be substantiated. The Porter family was in the process of moving to Trail, where Philip's father was to take on a new executive role, and it was understood that the young man, who was described as being slightly intellectually disabled, was unhappy about the move. The disappearance of Anthony Philip Porter has left a lasting scar on the community of Kimberley.
